Volunteer Profile: Tiangong You (Toby You)
The Tenderloin Tech Lab will be highlighting some of our faithful volunteers from time to time. Here at the Tenderloin Tech Lab, we heavily rely on the help and support from our volunteer base and can not thank them enough. Toby, a masters student at USF will be our first volunteer profile:
Name: Tiangong You (Toby You)
From: China, P.R.
What do you do at the Tenderloin Tech Lab and how long have you been a volunteer?
I do the volunteering in the Tenderloin Tech Lab, for 8 months. I teach the Beginners Linux course, do some one on on tutoring and help out in the drop-in lab.
What has been the most rewarding part of your experience at the Tenderloin Tech Lab?
The most rewarding part is that I can help people solving computer software problems in the Tenderloin Tech Lab. It is of my great pleasure to see people here learning computer skills and use them to do their job.
What is it like going between a master’s program at USF and working with people from the Tenderloin?
As foreigners, one of our most severe problems is the English capability. It’s nice to be in a place such as the Tenderloin Tech Lab where we are supposed to talk extensibly to people with various accents. Also, we are conducting intro level Linux classes in the Tenderloin Tech Lab, which many USF students would be jealous of since they don’t actually know how to use Linux 🙂
Anything else you would like to add?
I would like to express my gratitude to the people at Tenderloin Tech Lab for their patience. I’m really feeling like home here 🙂
