St. Anthony’s Helps Sherrie Maintain Stability, Giving Her the Opportunity to Dedicate Time to the Tenderloin Community

Despite facing personal challenges, including housing instability, health concerns, and raising a family as a single mother, Sherrie has become an active member of the local community. Her story begins with a difficult period in her life when she felt isolated and overwhelmed by the challenges she faced. “I was at a point where I didn’t see much light at the end of the tunnel,” Sherrie said, reflecting on her initial state before engaging with St. Anthony’s services.
Sherrie’s life improved significantly when she discovered St. Anthony Foundation. The organization’s resources, particularly the Tech Lab and case management through the Resource Center, provided her with essential services and a sense of belonging and purpose.
St. Anthony’s was there for me when I felt like I had nowhere else to turn. They didn’t just offer help; they offered hope.

Because of St. Anthony’s, Sherrie has the freedom to volunteer with The Housing Rights Committee, which addresses some of the most pressing issues in the local community. This involvement allows her to contribute to society by fighting for tenants’ rights and gives her a sense of purpose and belonging. Through her work, she addresses issues similar to those she has faced, providing empathy and assistance to others navigating through their own challenges. “Helping others has helped me heal. It’s like we’re all part of this big family, looking out for each other,” she said, emphasizing the communal spirit fostered by volunteering.
St. Anthony’s addresses immediate needs by providing critical support services and fosters a sense of community and mutual support among those it serves. Sherrie’s transition from seeking help to becoming a helper herself illustrates the cyclical nature of support and empowerment that St. Anthony’s advocates for.
Her dedication to volunteering in the local community and uplifting others is an example of how individuals, when supported by compassionate and comprehensive community services, can overcome adversity, and make significant contributions to their communities. “I never imagined I could be where I am today. It’s thanks to St. Anthony’s and the community here that I’ve found my purpose,” Sherrie concluded. Her story serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for many facing similar struggles.
