Andrew’s Journey from Incarceration to Community Healing

September 30, 2024

After spending years in correctional facilities, Andrew was released in December 2023 and ready to turn his life around. Over the past year, Andrew found purpose working at St. Anthony Foundation and participating in local government initiatives that help formerly incarcerated individuals reintegrate into society.

Andrew grew up in East Oakland with parents who struggled with addiction, and his home life was often chaotic and unstable. He bounced between schools and acted out due to challenges at home. Despite his intelligence, Andrew found it hard to focus on academics. Eventually, he became involved in selling drugs, and had his first interactions with the criminal justice system at a young age.

After spending years in various correctional facilities, Andrew’s time at San Quentin marked a turning point in his life. The prison offered a range of programs that encouraged him to begin healing. He enrolled in educational programs, earned his GED, and participated in restorative justice initiatives. “San Quentin had so many programs. I just took every program I could,” Andrew recalls. Programs like No More Tears, a violence- and crime-prevention initiative that reduces recidivism, along with various educational courses, opened doors to a new path for Andrew. He began to see his potential beyond the label of “incarcerated.”

Upon his release, Andrew secured a job in St. Anthony’s Community Safety Services. At St. Anthony’s, he plays a vital role in keeping the area clean and safe for residents and guests. As a member of community safety services, Andrew gives back to the community that supported him through his transition back into society.

This is where I come from. Now I’m just giving back. It’s my way to give back.

Andrew also actively engages in local government. Drawing on his personal experiences, he offers insights and feedback on city programs that assist formerly incarcerated individuals. His contributions help tackle systemic challenges many formerly incarcerated individuals face upon reentry into society.

Through his efforts at St. Anthony’s and in local government, Andrew reshapes the narrative around people who have been incarcerated. Andrew’s journey shows the power of second chances and the importance of community-based support systems in fostering healing in San Francisco.
