St. Anthony Foundation Welcomes the Community to its Annual THINK PINK Event

St. Anthony’s Medical Clinic will host THINK PINK on Oct. 17, a day of unity, education, and pink pride as we transform the Golden Gate Greenway between Leavenworth and Jones in honor of those impacted by breast cancer.
WHAT: St. Anthony Foundation will host its annual THINK PINK event on Thursday, Oct. 17, to promote breast cancer awareness and provide vital health services to the Tenderloin community. The event will feature free mammograms for Medical Clinic patients via the MammoVan which provides free cancer screenings for women who face barriers to accessing traditional health care. It will also include patient education sessions led by medical staff and engaging community activities, such as painting projects.
New this year, information tables will be available where St. Anthony’s staff will share details about the range of services offered by the foundation. The Medical Clinic team will also be on hand to answer questions and provide resources for families. As part of the Eligibility and Enrollment campaign, multi-lingual on-site support will be available to help community members access vital healthcare services.
“THINK PINK is about coming together as a community. Breast cancer has affected nearly everyone, whether through personal experience, supporting a loved one, or losing someone close. This event allows us to connect on a human and even spiritual level, sharing our stories and supporting one another,” said St. Anthony’s Medical Director Dr. David Corner. “We’re also bringing vital information and screening resources directly to the block, making it easier for women to access the care they need. It’s about breaking down barriers and making sure our community has the tools to stay healthy.”

WHY: Breast cancer disparities in San Francisco, particularly in neighborhoods like the Tenderloin, underscore the urgent need for awareness and support in underserved communities. Research shows that neighborhoods with lower socioeconomic status face more severe outcomes in breast cancer diagnoses. Residents of the Tenderloin are more likely to be diagnosed with later-stage breast cancer and more aggressive subtypes, such as triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), which is harder to treat. These outcomes are further compounded by limited access to preventive care, early detection, and comprehensive treatment services.
Racial disparities also contribute to these outcomes, with Black women experiencing the greatest challenges, including lower survival rates. Addressing these inequities is essential to improving health outcomes in the Tenderloin and similar communities. Our THINK PINK event is designed to raise awareness, provide critical information, and connect community members with resources that promote early detection and breast cancer prevention. By increasing access to care and fostering community involvement, we aim to reduce these disparities and support the health and well-being of all Tenderloin residents.
