Day 17: Exhilarated
Today we sat down with Breyl, a rather new St. Anthony’s Dining Room volunteer.
Annabel: How long have you been volunteering at St. Anthony’s?
Breyl: A year and a third.
Annabel: How’d you hear about us?
Breyl: In December of 2015, I went to a retreat and there were a couple of ex-nuns I chatted with. I asked them what they did, and they said that they volunteered at St. Anthony’s. In January of 2016, I volunteered for the first time and have been coming back once a week (sometimes even twice a week) ever since. It’s fun!
Annabel: Do you have a favorite memory of volunteering here?
Breyl: Yes. There’s a guy who comes through the line multiple times every day—never looks at people—always zipping by. A week ago, I asked him what his name was, and now he comes through the line and smiles. It’s the high point of my year.
Annabel: In one word, how do you feel when you volunteer here?
Breyl: Exhilarated!
Annabel: Is there anything else you’d like to mention?
Breyl: The guests are so polite—they’re just delightful. No one is excluded here—it’s wonderful.
